11. “Forever & Always”
Behind the Music: Taylor wrote this song at the very end of the recording process, and she had to plead with Scott Borchetta to include it on her album the day before the final version of Fearless was submitted.
Between the Lines: Taylor writes about the confusion and hurt that comes when someone who seemed committed suddenly gets cold and distant. The songwriter explained, “I’d never had that happen to me before that way, with that abruptness. I thought to myself, ‘This needs to be said.’ It’s a song about watching somebody completely fade away in a relationship and wondering what you did wrong and wondering why things have changed.” Taylor’s feelings are evident in the changing tempo of the song; she told the LA Times, “That emotion of rejection, for me, usually starts out sad and then gets mad. This song starts with this pretty melody that’s easy to sing along with, then in the end . . . I’m basically screaming it because I’m so mad. I’m really proud of that.” As in most Taylor Swift songs, rain has a role to play, this time its more miserable side represents the heartache of being left in the lurch.
Audience of One: This one’s for Taylor’s most high-profile boyfriend, Joe Jonas, with whom she had a very secret relationship and a very public break-up. Asked about the song, Joe Jonas told Seventeen, “It’s flattering. It’s always nice to hear their side of the story.” He was less kind in his musical response; the opening verse to the Jonas Brothers’ song “Much Better,” goes “I get a rep for breakin’ hearts / Now I’m done with superstars / And all the tears on her guitar.” Ouch.
Fun Facts: The platinum edition of Fearless also includes a plaintive piano and cello version of “Forever & Always.”
Diary Decoder: “If you play these games we’re both going to lose” is the secret message for Joe. With the release of Fearless: Platinum Edition, Taylor still didn’t have Joe out of her system — the piano version has a different message: “I still miss who I thought he was.”
You Saw It Live: Taylor’s 2009 CMA Awards performance starts with an interview where she admits, “If guys don’t want me to write bad songs about them, then they shouldn’t do bad things,” then the cameras cut to Taylor belting out “Forever & Always” sitting on one of the red chairs that would become familiar set pieces on her Fearless Tour. The opening conversation would appear as well, but with footage featuring Dateline’s Hoda Kotb.
12. “The Best Day”
Behind the Music: Taylor wrote this song on the road in the summer and recorded it secretly so she could surprise her mom with it for Christmas.
Between the Lines: Though Taylor writes a lot of love songs for the guys in her life, this one is for her family, who not only support her in her career but gave her a wonderful childhood. Taylor mined her childhood memories for the first verse, using a child-like voice to capture the essence of those years.
